Textbooks???

Two days ago we headed to the library to sign up for the summer reading program. The boys got their record sheets and immediately went home to read. By yesterday morning they had all completed the required three hours of reading for the first prize so we headed back to the library to claim their new bags. They need to read another three hours to claim their next prize of tickets to Elitch's (a local amusement park). While driving home from the library yesterday Tegan asked why the time they had to spend reading was so low since they could finish the whole program in three days. I told him that there are many children out there that do not enjoy reading for one reason or another. None of the boys could comprehend this fact and asked how could someone possibly not like reading. I told them the most likely reason is that they had not been exposed to good books and that some students only know a book to be a 'textbook' which tend to be quite boring. Tegan's next question made me laugh. He asked, "What's a textbook?"

I love that the boys have no idea what a text book is. That's just another reason why we home school. They get to read real books everyday and learn and absorb so much more than if they were reading textbooks.
