We have never had so many of us going so many different directions on the same day. Over a month ago we had planned to go up to Summit County (three towns and four ski hills all in close proximity) and hold a 1-day Parent Practicum for Classical Conversations. This is a day to help the parents expand their knowledge and also do a small presentation on CC. Andy runs most of the day, I give the CC info meeting, and the boys throw in their grammar memory when they're asked, so it's a family affair. It didn't quite work that way this time.
When we got the boys' basketball schedule back in November it showed Feb 5th as their last day of games, so I planned our calendar accordingly. However, two weeks ago I found out that their tournament actually lasts until Feb 19th, if they continue to win. So, that became our first issue. We decided that Conner would stay with our friends/his coach, across the street and play his games. We packed his bag with his basketball gear and warm clothes.
Next, some other friends invited the boys to play for the day while Andy and I went up to Summit County. They live in the mountains, on the way up, so it would be an easy drop off. We decided they might have more fun doing that and since we'll be doing three of these type meetings we probably don't need to make them go to all of them. So, we packed Riley up for a day in the mountains, with all his snow gear.
Tegan was also going to go to these friends' house, but then my cousin arrived in town. She ended up spending the night and we found she was heading up to snowboard right where we were going to be hosting the meeting. She offered to take Tegan with her since he had a free pass to ski there. That meant we had to pack a separate bag for him with all his ski gear and food.
Also, we have a puppy without any fenced yard. She accompanied Conner across the street and went to puppy daycare for the day. We only had to pack her leash.
Finally, we packed the bags for our meeting - snacks, whiteboard, many books, presentation notes, etc.
At 6:30 yesterday morning we all parted ways. Andy and I took Riley with us to drop him off at our friend's on the way. My cousin dropped off Conner and the puppy and then continued up to the mountains with Tegan. Other than being somewhat sick, Conner had a great day at his basketball tournament. They came in 4th place out of 8 teams, so not too bad. He was exhausted when we picked him up last night. Tegan got in a gorgeous day of skiing with two of my cousins. It was his first day this year and he said he made it the whole day without falling. He also proved to be amazingly responsible with all his belongings. Nothing was left behind and he carried all his own gear. This past week has shown a huge growth in his maturity and it has been so wonderful to watch. Riley was nervous about playing at a friend's house without any of his brothers with him, but he had a terrific day and got to know a great family a bit better. The puppy had a good time across the street as she was playing with another puppy all day. Thankfully she came home ready for bed. Andy and I met some sweet ladies in Summit County and enjoyed our drive through the mountains (except for the massive amounts of ski traffic, which has cured me from ever wanting to go skiing on the weekend here) and a lunch out together.
We all had a great day, but at 9:00 last night I was so ready for our family to get back together. We got Tegan before we left Summit County, then picked up Riley on our way down. We stayed at our friends' for a bit and visited. She had made us all dinner and it was a very welcome sight after dealing with the ski traffic for 1.5 hours previous. The traffic thinned while we ate and then we headed home. We picked up Conner and Aspen across the street at 9pm and all came home to fall into bed. A hectic, but fun day for all, however, it felt even better to get us all home, under the same roof, at the end of the day.
